The shape and size of breasts impact women’s social lives. We can divide cosmetic breast operations into three categories: augmentations, reductions and lifts. Breast augmentation is the most common procedure for body contouring to obtain an aesthetic body shape. Breast reduction is applied to extremely large breasts that may cause bad posture or pain. Breast lift operation is recommended for patients with deformed breasts caused by pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Cosmetic Breast Operations
Breast augmentation: This is the most common type of cosmetic mammaplasty. Breast augmentation will utilize fluid-filled implants, were the prosthesis is inserted through an incision around or under the nipple. The operation is performed under general anesthesia, and the procedure will last 1-2 hours. The patient only needs to stay in the hospital overnight, but should limit physical activity for up to 3 weeks after the operation. The patient should also avoid saunas, steam baths and tanning for a few months.
Breast reduction: This procedure mainly aims to correct posture and increase comfort by reducing the excessively large breast. The ideal breast size for the patient is determined during the physical examination. Patients aged > 30 years will undergo mammography to decide whether or not to send the excised material for pathological examination. The operation is performed under general anesthesia. The patient can use painkillers the first few days to reduce pain. Bandages will be removed 2 to 3 days after the operation, but the patient will resume wearing surgical bras for a while longer. The patient should avoid heavy physical activity immediately after the surgical procedure. The patient can return to normal activities within 2 weeks.
Breast lift: This procedure can be combined with other mammaplasty operations, or be performed alone. It aims to restore the shape of deformed breasts due to weight changes or breastfeeding. This procedure is easier that breast reduction. The size of the dark area around the nipple will also be decreased. The breast will be lifted if the volume of the breast is adequate. The breast tissue may be supported with silicone prosthesis if the volume is too small or if the breast is sagging. The operation lasts 2-3 hours and the patient will be discharged after 1 day.
